Jew Flees Man with Club: Artist Statement

Jews have been around between 3,000 to 3,500 years, depending on who is doing the counting.

Since the fall of the second temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD and the ascent of Christianity, it has been nearly 2,000 years of exile, violent persecution, and wandering in search of safe havens for the Jewish people.

Ironically, Islamic countries were relatively benign to their Jews. Traditional Muslim rulers generally used taxation, segregation, and social stigma as their preferred means of domination. Genocide did not really enter into Islamic political thinking until the 1920s and '30s. It was the infusion of German Nazi ideology into Muslim universities, media, and popular discourse that sowed the seeds of today's Jew hatred in the Middle East.

My three 5x7 inch folded cards show an almost cave painting depiction of a man with a club chasing an unarmed human figure on the front and back covers.

The inside spread of the cards show frightened and vulnerable Jews seeking shelter from attack by Muslim terrorists from Gaza on October 7th 2023. The Jewish people have not experienced such savagery and bloodlust since the Holocaust.

These mixed media photo-collages were kept small.

I could not stand to see them larger.
